Minimise. Refine. Reclaim skin you feel confident in.

Scars are the body's natural response to injury -- but not all scars heal equally. A scar that is wide, raised, discoloured, distorted, or placed in a visible location can be a lasting reminder of an injury, surgery, or illness. Scar revision is a range of surgical and non-surgical techniques that improve the appearance, texture, and function of problematic scars -- making them less noticeable and more comfortable.

No scar can be completely erased. But with the right technique and timing, scars can be refined to the point where they are barely perceptible. Dr. Bhavya Sree brings a plastic surgeon's precision and an artist's eye to every scar revision.

Types of Scars Treated

Scar Type Description Surgical Scars Wide, stretched, or poorly healed scars from previous surgery -- Traumatic Scars including C-section scars, appendectomy scars, and old trauma Hypertrophic Scars repairs. Contracture Scars Scars from accidents, burns, animal bites, lacerations -- particularly those that healed with poor alignment or irregular edges.

Raised, red, firm scars that stay within the original wound boundary. Respond well to steroid injections, laser, silicone, and surgical revision. Tight, restricting scars that pull on surrounding tissue -- often following burns. May limit movement and require Z-plasty or flap reconstruction.

Treatment Options Surgical Revision

The scar is excised and re-closed with meticulous technique -- finer sutures, layered closure, and optimal wound tension -- to produce a significantly improved scar. Often combined with geometric techniques such as Z-plasty (reorients scar direction) or W-plasty (breaks up the linear scar into a zigzag) to interrupt the eye's perception of the scar.

Steroid Injections Intralesional corticosteroid injections flatten and soften raised hypertrophic scars. A course of 3-6 injections at 4-6 week intervals is typically recommended. Often combined with silicone sheeting. Laser Resurfacing / Fractional Laser Laser treatments improve scar texture, colour (redness or pigmentation), and surface irregularity. Particularly effective for red or dark post-surgical and acne scars. Multiple sessions required. Silicone Therapy Silicone gel or sheets applied to a healing scar reduce hypertrophy and discolouration. Most effective when started early (as soon as wounds close) and used consistently for 3-6 months.

Anaesthesia Local anaesthesia (most cases)

Duration 30 minutes2 hours depending on scar size and technique

Hospital Stay Day procedure

Best Timing At least 12 months after original injury or surgery Return to Work 3-7 days Final Result 12-18 months (scars continue maturing)

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the right time to revise a scar? Scars should be allowed to mature for at least 12 months before surgical revision -- and ideally 18 months. A fresh scar is still remodelling; revising it too early often produces a similar or worse outcome. Non-surgical treatments (silicone, steroid injections) can be started much earlier -- often as soon as wounds close.

Will scar revision completely remove my scar? No scar can be completely erased -- any incision leaves a scar. However, revision can significantly reduce the visibility, width, texture, and colouration of a problematic scar -- to the point where it is barely noticeable in normal circumstances. Dr. Bhavya Sree will give you an honest assessment of realistic improvement at consultation.

Can facial scars be revised? Yes -- facial scar revision is one of the most impactful applications. Facial skin heals very well, and a scar revised with correct technique and placed along natural facial lines can become virtually invisible over 12-18 months.
